There are 5.7 million adults diagnosed of bipolar manic depressive disorder in the United States. Also, the 3.4 million American children and adolescents diagnosed of depression are highly likely to experience bipolar manic disorder symptoms or bipolar depression. The condition can reduce up to 9.2 years from your life span can also cause people to be suicidal or self-destructive behavior is stated by the National Health Institute of Mental Health. Hence, one of the leading causes of human disability is bipolar depressive or bipolar manic disorder. Bipolar is a psychiatric illness that causes unusual and sudden changes to mood, activity and energy levels, which may affect an individual’s ability to carry out his day to day tasks. Going from feeling very sad, helpless and despaired, manic depression symptoms can cause him/her to shift to feeling euphoric happiness, being overly active and practically on top of the world, which has been known to severe relationships, affect job and school performance, or even cause suicide.

Definition

Bipolar manic disorder symptoms include high levels of energy, inability to sleep, having big plans for activities, being restless, uneasy and talkative. Bipolar depression symptoms include low energy phases with negative emotions such as feelings of guilt, hopelessness, loss of appetite, anxiety and guilt. A patient may experience several of these symptoms for every day. Bipolar symptoms usually occur during late teen or early adult years. Most patients started experiencing symptoms at around 25 years of age. According to the Bipolar disorder statistics, women are three times more prone to experiencing bipolar episodes than men. The National Health Institute of Mental Health also states that having a bipolar disorder history in the family may increase one’s risk of developing bipolar symptoms.

Analysis

Physical examinations, interview, lab tests like blood work and brain scans and evaluation of the patient’s medical history is involved in the first step in diagnosis. The doctor may provide referral to a trained mental health specialist such as a psychiatrist, who is more experienced in handling bipolar disorder after a complete diagnostic evaluation. Extremely important in helping bipolar sufferers lead a normal life is proper and immediate diagnosis. To reduce the frequency or severity of the symptoms, it will also help provide the right kind of treatment.

Treatment method

A mixture of psychotherapy and medicines are typically suggested to efficiently stop relapse and bipolar episodes. Mood stabilizers, anti psychotic medications, and atypical anti psychotic things might be prescribed for bipolar individuals. They’re typically prescribed by a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist. In a few instances, sedatives or sleep medicines are suggested to patients who have difficulty with sleep. “Talk therapy” or “psychotherapy” offers guidance, education, and support for bipolar individuals in addition to their families. This involves various approaches like social rhythm therapy and psychological education, family concentrated therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy.

Warning

There are other illnesses that may coexist with bipolar manic depressive disorder, making it more difficult to diagnose and treat. Substance abuse is may prolong or trigger bipolar symptoms and cause behavioral problems associated with bipolar manic disorder. Anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress, social phobia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may overlap with bipolar disorder. Also, people suffering this condition have higher risks of developing thyroid disease, migraine headaches, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other physical illnesses. Hence, seeking professional help upon experiencing symptoms of bipolar depressive or bipolar manic disorder is advised.

We go through life with our ups and down. But those with this mental illness called bipolar disorder, their good days are really up with high energy level and their low days very, very low with low energy . Patients with symptoms of the disorder can have problems with their work, children with their school performance, relationships can go down with daily activities easily disrupted. Bipolar disorder can be treated, but a lot of individuals are not able to see the warning signs and get the help needed. All must be warned that this mental disorder can get worse if its not treated early. Therefore, important to know and learn the early signs and seek help as soon as possible. In other words all must be able to recognize the early symptoms for it is the way forward to getting this mental disease under control.

Known also as manic depression, bipolar disorder which is a mental disease which has severe shifting of energy level, thoughts mood and behaviors. When patient are in their highs it is called mania and when they are low – depression. Cycles of bipolar differ; some can last for days, and others weeks or months. Bipolar mood swings are unlike ordinary mood changes because with bipolar disorder it is serious and can interfere with daily activities.

Mania and Depression ” The Difference

When victims are going through mania symptoms they can become very impulsive and decide with the spur of the moment to leave their jobs, having a few credit cards with lots of credit and sleeping two to three hours with lots of energy. On the other hand patients going through the depressive episode, this same person can be very tired after a long rest and get out of bed tired with feelings of being hopeless and helpless.

What Causes Bipolar Disease Symptoms?

To date no one really knows what causes bipolar. Experts believe that this mental disorder may be passed on by family members and has biological and environmental causes. Symptoms of bipolar can be noticed in young children as young as age two but that has to be clarified by the experts to determine if its bipolar. Bipolar symptoms in children can be both subtle and confusing because of other mental disorder which may accompany bipolar. With adults it is quite straight forward, the only difficulty is when other symptoms similar to bipolar symptom coming together. This is probably one of the reason why many people are under diagnosed. Having the right diagnosis and treatment, bipolar patients can live a normal life.

Bipolar Medication

When psychiatrist are treating bipolar disorder – doctors use mood stabilizers to help control the lows and highs of bipolar. While bipolar medication like Lithium may have bad side effects, they are the key in the treatment of both mania and depression symptoms. While Lithium is the oldest medication it is very effective mood stabilizer. It is a good medicine in the treatment of bipolar mania.

Bipolar Disorder is a condition where someone feels both “highs” (manic episodes) and “lows” (depressive episodes) at different times. There can be rapid movements between these highs and lows or the interval between them can be months at times. There is great variation in the severity of the mood shifts.

Main Signs

Bipolar disorder symptoms are not universal and not all people will experience the same symptoms or even those who do experience the same symptoms, the severity will differ. Bipolar disease has many factors that can affect it and they are unique to each family and to each individual. Bipolar disorder is common and can be very serious if it is left untreated. If signs or symptoms of bipolar disorder appear, immediately seek the attention of a psychiatrist.

Depression stage may be likened to a severe depression in which symptoms can include low energy, sad feelings, depressed, anxiety, emptiness, being helpless and feeling hopeless and worthless. Going with these negative feelings are thoughts of suicide and wanting to commit suicide. Some other signs which can be added are guilt feelings, no interest in activities once enjoyed, loss of concentration, problems with sleeping, and change in appetite.

Children with the Disease

The knowledge of how to recognize and handle a child with bipolar disorder is imperative for parents, teachers, counselors, school staff and teachers. Identifying the signs and symptoms early on can be incredibly beneficial to the future treatment and well-being of the child. Co-operation between everyone involved with help alleviate future behavioral, academic and social issues.

Seeking a Treatment

The two most commonly used treatments for bipolar disorder are with mood stabilizers or psychotherapy. Drugs used to treat bipolar disease have many side effects and it is important for patients to know these. Mood stabilizers can be very damaging to the body if they are not taking at the correct time. These drugs need to be taking religiously, even when the symptoms of bipolar disorder subside. Things that need to be closely monitored while on drug therapy include: appearance of severe mood episodes, sleeping activity, behavior and changes in appetite. Things such as alcohol, recreational drugs can interact with the bipolar disorder drugs. The overall goal is to reduce the stresses experienced by the patient and to give them control back over their lives to improve both their illness and their quality of life.

Do you suffer from bipolar symptoms and need to find someone that understands what it’s like to suffer from the disease and how to live with the symptoms? Joining a support group will allow you to find new friends you can share your ups and downs with. The primary concept of group support includes sharing, which often lends to better relief than those that seek individual counseling. These types of groups create a safe place to socialize and work through issues while the victim learns they are not alone in their suffering.

The Positives Side of a Support Group

Although group therapy will not benefit everyone who suffers from bipolar disorder, it can provide important assistance to many people, and help improve their therapeutic outcome. One problem that many sufferers of bipolar disorder have is the lonely feeling that no one else understands or has gone through their type of struggle. Attending a support group can help by providing a group of friends and other supporters who can provide encouragement and show the sufferer that they are not alone.

Bipolar Support Group – Who can be in?

Because there is a great deal of trust involved family and friends can be present to help family members handle those problems. But the biggest problem is – families and friends can be the ones who are pushing aside their relative – patient mainly due to the lack of knowledge of the illness. This is the main reason why bipolar support groups have included professionals like mental health nurses and doctors because of the positive outcome.

In addition to taking medications to treat your bipolar condition, it is also helpful to join a support group where you can meet others who have or have had this condition. Some in the support group may still be taking medication for their bipolar disorder, while others may no longer need medication. But listening to and learning from their experiences and insights can be quite helpful in the successful treatment of the bipolar disorder.

Psychiatrist as Advisers

Psychiatrists strive to offer you professional recommendations on the bipolar medication kind and how often you must take it. Yet, the most crucial thing regarding bipolar medication is that patients trust their doctors. These physicians (psychiatrists) give needed information and the requirement of being a member in a bipolar support group. This is not only a great challenge for patients, it is also a great challenge for physicians, as the advice if not followed, is futile.

Ken P Doyle is an advocate for bipolar disorder and has a wealth of knowledge on mental illness. As an advocate he would like to share some FREE information and data on bipolar support groupsand bipolar support group.

Treatment

The usual treatment for this illness may include mood stabilizing drugs and counseling. It is very important that victims of bipolar learn about their prescribed drugs and its possible bad effects. There must be a very reliable way of taking their drugs efficiently and taking it daily, even when the victims feel better and stable so as to prevent a relapse in the illness. Monitoring of mood must be constantly done by the bipolar patient, a member of the family or a close friends to stop severe episodes and moods from happening or patients will end up in hospital. Sleeping patterns, their behaviors, and loss or gaining of appetite must be closely watched as well. All patients must try and avoid the use of alcohol, illicit drugs like marijuana and other drugs, which can make bipolar symptoms worse. Living a very healthy lifestyle is important with a well balanced diet, exercise regularly and enough sleep. This is done with the aim of lowering the stress level to help patients control and improve their illness and quality of life.

What Causes the Disorder?

Has anybody found the real cause of the disorder which causes symptoms of bipolar in children? While it would be good if we could say that X or Y was the culprit, but the answer is not easy. A lot of scientists think that this mental disease are caused by a number of factors all working in unison. With bipolar, these factors can be divided into 2 groups ” both psychological and biological causes. In plain terms, bipolar in children is a mental illness caused both by physical (biological) and outside influence (environmental).

Influence OF Genes

Is bipolar in children inherited from family members? Researchers have found that when studying multiple family, adoption and twin children studies are more likely to inherit the mood disorders than those who come from relatives which have no symptoms of bipolar disorder background. In the study of twins it has been found that if one child is with the disorder it is about three times more likely the other one will have it to.

The Question of Neurotransmitters

But what is inherited? Neurotransmitter system is the information network of the bran which unfortunately has received a lot of attention on the possible cause of the disorder which causes bipolar in children and adults alike. Scientists have known for some time that there is a link between mood disorders and neurotransmitters. When medications are used to target and change these transmitters, they are able to relieve these bipolar in children and adults mood disorders.

Stress and its Triggers

Why does bipolar disorder occur? It may because of mental, environmental and emotional issues, having a stressful life. Stress usually comes from a lot of reasons. For example, losing your sweetheart, losing your revenue sources and moving to a place which is totally new for you may be those reasons. But stress is different to different people, and one’s huge stress and pains maybe just nothing or kind of pleasure to another person.

Summing it all together

The “Diathesis-Stress Model” is an explanation for symptoms of bipolar in children, and it may be the best explanation ever. Diathesis here means that a person is more vulnerable to some diseases, and he/she may inherit some physical problems, whether those physical problems will appear depends on the stress in his/her life.

The best treatment methods for bipolar disorder include a combination of counseling and medication. The majority of psychiatrists use a combination of medications to separately treat the depression and the bipolar mania. Ongoing psychotherapy is an important part of treatment for bipolar patients, and has a greater impact that drugs alone.

Treating Bipolar

Those suffering from bipolar disorder will need to take medication to control the symptoms of the disease, and will likely need medication for their entire life. In addition to medication, psychotherapy can provide relief by giving the sufferer the opportunity to talk with a professional about the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that are part of his or her disease, as well as the underlying causes of this disorder.

Treatment of Bipolar Mania and Depression

If you or a relative is afflicted with bipolar mania, a psychiatrist can give you a prescription for an antipsychotic medicine such as lithium or benzodiazepine, to control the insomnia, being hostile, over activity, and oversensitivity. A mood leveler might be included with the previously mentioned medicine, but for bipolar depression, lithium can be taken because it is an anticonvulsant and antipsychotic drug. This mixture of medicines are mostly to change the moods without bringing on a bipolar manic attack.

Treating Bipolar Disease Symptoms

Bipolar I Disorder is primarily treated with continuous therapy along with a mood-stabilizing medication. These medications could contain lithium, carbamazepine or Valproic acid/divalproex, and are usually prescribed along with an antipsychotic drug. Patients in this program generally show a dramatic decrease in symptoms as well as almost 10% decline in suicide and attempted suicide rates. Mania patients may be treated with either antipsychotic or benzodiazepine drugs which include the mood-stabilizer, while someone with bipolar disorder will follow a protocol including quetiapine, olanzapine or lamotrigine and an added mood-stabilizer. Some doctors will switch mood-stabilizing prescriptions or add other to achieve the desired mix. It’s uncommon for antidepressants to be used in treating depression and they may trigger mania symptoms. It is important to combine up to two mood-stabilizers or antipsychotic drugs with antidepressants in order to avoid bipolar mania symptoms.

The Dangers of Antidepressants

Bipolar disorder is generally not treated with antidepressants because of their side effects of causing manic episode. Although there have been breakthroughs in the adjustments to serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain, unfortunately the reputation makes doctors reluctant to prescribe it. Certain anticonvulsants present in the antidepressants may cause birth defects, making it unsafe for expecting and nursing mothers. The best treatment plans for bipolar disease combine psychosocial treatment with medications.

Most psychiatrists and doctors are the first line in the treatment of mental disease known as bipolar. Pharmacological intervention through the use of medications are normally prescribed to treat bipolar depression and mania. We have highlighted some general classes and examples of the types of medicines used to control the bipolar.

Treating Bipolar manic depression

1.Mood stabilizers: Mood stabilizers are used for treating bipolar manic depression by doctors. However, there is a big problem with antidepressants. It is a high risk for such patients as they may switch into either mania or hypo mania symptoms. The patients affected by bipolar have severe mood swing. In order to control such patients from this cycling of moods, most of the doctors generally combine stabilizing drugs with antidepressants.

2.Lithium. Lithium is generally used to control bipolar manic patients. It is most effective in limiting the reappearance of depressive and manic modes.

3.Two other effective medications are Valproate (sold as Depakote) and carbamazeprine (marketed as Tegretol), which prevent convulsions, stabilize the patient’s mood, and treat bipolar symptoms that resist effective treatment with other drugs.

4.Here is an antipsychotic drug, Valproate and carbamazepine, which is quite good as a mood stabilizer for those who cannot respond to lithium or anticonvulsants treatments. And also it is proven by the doctors and patients.

5.Olanzapine is another drug, Aproved by the FDA , which is capable in the treatment of severe bipolar manic symptoms.

Some Other Bipolar Treatments

If you have or know someone with bipolar manic depression, you should know that there is an intervention that can be used as part of a treatment plan.

Warning to All

Psychosocial intervention can be used in the treatment of bipolar manic depression .Because of the recurring nature of bipolar manic depression, a continuous long-term treatment is absolutely necessary. A good combination of medicine and psychosocial treatment is vital.

While medications listed may help prevent bipolar symptoms there are known side effects that must be closely watched by the individuals when they are given by physician. All over-the-counter drugs and nutritional supplements must be closely monitored because of the danger of other drugs interacting with the bipolar treatments. Do not work alone, its always necessary to consult your doctor for the continuation or the stopping of certain medications and professional care.

It is important for bipolar patients to be aware of how they feel to be able to remain healthy. When many people have bipolar attacks or feel depressed too much time has passed to be able to treat the moodiness. Always look for any little variations such as a change in energy, thinking, moods and sleeping habits. Moving quickly and very soon for any problem might help you avoid several minimal mood alterations from becoming a very bad occurrence of bipolar maniac depression.

Always Know What are your Triggers ” The early warning signs

It is best to look and understand warning signs of an oncoming bipolar depressive episode. A great method is to create a check list of any symptoms that were common in your latest episode. It also helps to be alert to triggers, such as outside pressure that caused the issue. Some common triggers are:

Stress: from work or from families. Difficulties financially: because of the hopelessness feeling in bipolar depression ” it can add stress to a patient. Fighting and arguments: especially with your loved ones. Having problems in school or at work: relationships can suffer in these two different places. Seasonal changes: for some people these seasonal changes can also affect the hormones in the body. Not enough sleep: while getting enough sleep is recommended- lack of sleep can be a sign of what is to come.

Other Warning signs of Depression

Not wanting to do any activities . Hate being around people. Wanting to have a chocolate. Having bad headaches. No interest in everybody. Feeling of being bothered by people. Feeling of wanting to sleep and sleep even during the day.

The Red flags OF Bipolar manic or Hippo manic symptoms

I can read a lot of books all at once. I am unusually talkative . I easily getting angry. I am hungry even after a good meal. My friends tell me I am bad. I have lots of energy.

Create a New Approach to Health care

If you see any signs of bipolar manic or bipolar depression, act quickly. When this happens, it’s best to have a health care approach ready. It may be composed of some activities or coping skills you or your family can utilize to achieve a more stable mood. While it takes a little experimenting and time to find the strategy that works best, many with bipolar systems have found the following to be helpful:

Talk to someone who understands. Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Try not to take on too much at once. Consider going to a support group session. Try different things. And make sure you stick with your therapy.

Advise

It is important that you control your bipolar manic depression. Stress can attribute to starting an attack. You need to know your limits in everyday life and everyday interactions. Don’t take on more than you can handle. If you start to feel down, take some time to yourself.

This depressive disorder has been known to be with us since man started recording history. We read in the Old Testament, Job as well as the famous King David, suffered from this terrible illness. Hippocrates the Greek physician called depression, a black bile (melancholia). A clinical depression is a serious medical disorder that is negative in nature which affects how we feel, think and act. It has been written in literature arts for many, many years, but what does it mean when we refer to this mental illness – depressive disorder or a bipolar depression disorder? In the last century, depression was portrayed as a weakness of temperament which was inherited. Only in the beginning of the 20th century did Freud link the progress of depression to guilt with conflict.

The Two Divisions

Depression was divided into two ” during the middle of this century:

Endogenous: linked to a genetic origin, this depression is coming from within the body and probably is caused by the body itself but nobody knows the source. Bipolar depression happens to fall under this category.

Neurotic or reactive: is caused from outside, like the death of a loved one, losing somebody special and the loss of the only source of income. The focus changed from the cause, to the effects of depression in the 70s and the 80s.

We may never know what causes depression or bipolar depression, but most would agree that:

It is a syndrome that reflects severe sad, irritable mood which can be classed as abnormal sadness or grief. These feelings of sadness of depression are both intense and takes a long time when compared to the normal ups and downs.

The characteristics include eating, weight and sleeping problems and the presence of negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors. The physical symptoms are, crying spells, aches in the body, very low energy in both work and sex.

Depression increases the risks for coronary artery disease, HIV, asthma, and some other medical diseases. It can also increase the mortality rate of victims with this depressive conditions.

The huge financial and human costs of depression in the United States alone are huge and this includes – treatment costs, other indirect costs, like lost in productivity and absenteeism of workers.

Bipolar Depression Symptoms

The unique trait of this illness is, it’s not the outside that is causing the depression, but the brain producing its lows with the feelings of worry, sad, angry, guilt, isolation and hopelessness. This disorder is caused by the brains neurotransmitters which can cause sleeping and eating problems and a shift in moods.

Problems with Not Treating

Like many serious diseases, bipolar depression can create havoc with those living together, it can drain out the energy level of those with the depressed person.

Bipolar Treatment Depression

Is a member of your family or a friend showing symptoms of bipolar depression like sleeping too much, sad, feelings of helpless, worthless, and hopeless with decreased energy and concentration. Seek medical advice near you so they can be given early bipolar treatment.
