<p>Other folk remedies include tying string tightly around the little finger of the hand opposite the side of the nose that is bleeding. Tie it tight just below the fingernail. I don&#8217;t know how this could work but many people swear it does.</p>

Antioxidants are certain vitamins, minerals and other plant-based chemicals that protect us from free radicals &#8211; harmful molecules that damage our cells with the potential to cause cancer, heart disease and speed up the aging process. Blueberries contain vitamin A, C and E and the minerals zinc and selenium, all of which are potent antioxidants.</p>
<p>Selenium has several important functions as an antioxidant. First, it helps to regenerate vitamin C, when it has become deactivated after disarming a free radical. Second, it is needed to activate the most powerful of antioxidants, glutathione, found in the body.</p>
<p>Vitamin E is one of the few fat soluble antioxidants and therefore plays an important role in protecting our fat cells from oxidation and turning rancid. Another important antioxidant function of vitamin E is to protect LDL cholesterol from free radicals. This damage caused to LDL cholesterol is a proven cause of atherosclerosis and consequently increases the risk of heart disease.</p>
<p>Vitamin C is an integral part of the immune system and a powerful water soluble antioxidant. It protects lipids in the skin from free radical damage and protects protein and carbohydrates from the same fate. It also protects DNA cells from becoming mutated by free radicals, this mutation is becoming accepted as one main causes of cancer.</p>
<p>Beta Carotene is a powerful water soluble antioxidant. Unlike many other antioxidants, beta carotene has very impressive staying power: it can disarm up to a 1000 free radicals before it &#8220;lays down its guns&#8221;. According to a recent study, vitamin A was shown to have protein antioxidant properties that protected the lungs from the pollution-based free radicals we breathe in.</p>
<p>Zinc is a trace mineral with a 1000 functions and is found in almost every cell of the body. One study has shown that zinc may act as an important antioxidant to protect our brain blood barrier (BBB). The BBB protects the toxins that are found in the blood stream in the body from flowing into the head and affecting the brain. Zinc deficiency accompanied by oxidative stress has shown to greatly increase the permeability of the BBB. This of course has detrimental effects on brain cells.</p>

Carotenoids are potent antioxidants that can provide protection from free radical attacks, helping to slow down aging and lowering the risk of developing some diseases. There are actually over 600 known carotenoids and many of them are in carrots.</p>
<p>The most famous of these carotenoids is beta-carotene, which is also the most abundant carotenoid found in carrots. Beta-carotene is also the most common carotenoid that is turned into vitamin A. As vitamin A is only found in animal products, particularly dairy, carotenoids can be an essential source of vitamin A for vegans.</p>
<p>So how do carrots help the eyes? Once beta-carotene is turned into vitamin A, vitamin A is then turned into another substance called rhodopsin. Rhodopsin is a purple based chemical needed by the eyes to actually see in the dark. No rhodopsin &#8211; no night vision!</p>
<p>People who eat carrots or other foods rich in carotenoids have been shown in studies to be less likely to develop heart disease. Elderly people who ate carrots everyday were 50% less likely to have a heart attack. Furthermore, carrots also contain vitamin C, which help arteries stay elastic and healthy.</p>
<p>Carotenoids are also strongly associated with cancer prevention. As antioxidants, they can protect DNA cells from oxidation damage, which is one cause of cancer. Many studies show that a high carotenoid diet can reduce the risk of getting cancer of the lungs, colon, esophagus and the prostate by up to 50%.</p>
<p>Our eyes benefit greatly from carotenoids. Two carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin are densely packed in the eye, where they protect the retina from some of the damaging effects of UV light. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are among the best food sources for both these carotenoids.</p>
<p>Carotenoid intake may also be beneficial for diabetics. One study found that eating carotenoid rich foods, such as carrots, helped to lower spikes in blood sugar levels. It is not yet understood how carotenoids provide this observed benefit, but they certainly appear to make a difference.</p>
<p>One of the best ways to increase your daily intake is through juicing. Juicing carrots for example, helps carotenoids become more available for digestion because the chewing is already done &#8211; so to speak. You will also need 5 or more carrots to provide one glass of juice, providing A LOT of carotenoids!</p>

<p>Many of us do not partake in the healthy benefits of a proper diet. Supplementation with vitamins is a great resource to incorporate those healthy benefits we are lacking. However, it is futile to think that continuing a poor diet and taking these vitamins will fill the gap in our diet. In order to reap the benefits of vitamins, we must try to implement a healthier way of eating.</p>
<p>If you continue to partake in a diet high in saturated fat and red meat, you will only be overtaxing your already over burdened liver that is trying to filter out the bad stuff in your diet. In addition, anyone who has high blood pressure must adjust their diet to a healthier path. Otherwise, the body cannot fight this ailment with strength and vitality.</p>
<p>If you have high blood pressure and want a natural way to lower it, vitamin supplements can help. However, it also requires a healthy diet. Listed below are a few supplements beneficial in lowering high blood pressure.</p>
<p>1) Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 &#8211; This supplement aids in oxygenating and strengthening heart muscles as well as assisting with the metabolic process. Research has shown that this supplement is highly effective in fighting cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Use as directed on the package. </p>
<p>2) EFAs &#8211; Essential fatty acids found in fish oils and flaxseed oils can contribute to decreased blood pressure and blood lipids.  Most Eskimo cultures have low cardiovascular disease, mainly attributed to the fact that their diets consist of coldwater fish.</p>
<p>3) Vitamin E &#8211; Not only is this vitamin a scavenger of free radicals, it also helps to protect against heart attack and stroke. In addition, having a low level of this vitamin in the body is a primary indicator of heart disease.</p>
<p>4) Calcium &#8211; Not only does this supplement give a body strong bones and muscles, it also helps maintain normal blood pressure. Research has proven that in some people, calcium can modify hypertension.</p>
<p>5) Nicotinc Acid &#8211; This supplement is a compound found in Niacin that aids in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels.</p>
<p>Other beneficial nutrients able to aid in lowering blood pressure include Zinc, Ginger, Vitamin D, Lecithin (granule or capsules), and Chromium.</p>
<p>In addition, certain herbs can also help lower blood pressure. However, as with all supplementation, check with your doctor as these compounds can cause serious chemical interactions in your body if taken simultaneously with pharmaceutical drugs.</p>
<p>An herb combination excellent for lowering blood pressure includes garlic, blessed thistle, cayenne, black cohosh, kelp, valerian root and Parsley Leaves. The suggested dosage is four to eight times per day. Once you have attained a desired blood pressure level, lower the dose gradually in order to maintain it. In addition, women who are pregnant or nursing should not use this combination.</p>

<p>Regardless of whether you are suffering from dry itchy skin, dry patchy skin, or a severe dry skin rash there are certain vitamins for dry skin that can be pretty effective. Of all the vitamins that can provide help for dry skin, one of the most important and overlooked is fish oil which can help keep your skin healthy and youthful by normalizing lipids (skin oils) and cells.</p>
<p>Fish oils contain EPA and DHA which can not only reduce inflammation, but help regulate oil production within the skin. This makes it not only very effective for dry itchy skin, but for those who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, and acne.</p>
<p>Most folks don&#8217;t realize the important connection between fish oil and a hormone called prostaglandins. Good prostaglandins are important for health young skin.</p>
<p>Prostaglandins are a type of hormone that is responsible for regulating the cell functions.  They also help keep a hormone called androgen in balance so that you&#8217;re body doesn&#8217;t not produce too much oil which is one of the leading causes of oily skin, acne, clogged pores and blackheads. </p>
<p>In order to get these good prostaglandins you must either fish or take fish oil vitamins. And the problem is .. most of us never get enough fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids in our diet.</p>

<p>I have been a researcher and consumer of alternative medicine for most of my life.  Myself, along with an ever growing part of the population, understand that taking responsibility for your own health and wellness is crucial regardless of the type of medicine. </p>
<p>In holistic medicine there have been remarkable breakthroughs in non-invasive diagnostic tests.  How does this affect you, the consumer?  Science can now help you choose which vitamins and nutrition your body needs for optimal health.</p>
<p>Until now health enthusiasts have been self educated and self treating.  My now 89 year old mother educated herself about nutrition; I have her first edition of Back To Eden (1939) on my book shelf.  My mother was part of a generation of self-care pioneers including people like Edgar Cayce and others who dedicated their lives to discovering ways to treat people using natural remedies. </p>
<p>Applied Kinesiology was one of the first non-invasive diagnostic techniques I was exposed to.  AK is technique that uses the muscles as a feedback mechanism.  One common way of using Applied Kinesiology is to test the body&#8217;s response to vitamin supplements.</p>
<p>Another non-invasive diagnostic tool I discovered as a health consumer was the EAV machine (electro-acupuncture according to Voll).  The EAV machine tests the body&#8217;s acupuncture meridian system which conducts DC electrical current, or in Chinese medicine, known as chi or energy.  A simple probe is used on the hands, feet and teeth, which are the points on the body where the meridians end. The EAV is used to determine the functioning of the bodys meridian system.  Practitioners use this machine in a variety of ways to help determine which supplements your body needs.</p>
<p>Muscle testing, the intuitive albeit primitive way of self treating, has evolved into the ability to diagnose the biochemical and electrical balance using scientifically supported non-invasive tests.</p>
<p>One of the most comprehensive approaches to assessing your body&#8217;s general state of health is to look at both the saliva (whats inside the cells) and urine (whats being eliminated). Saliva is an intracellular fluid and is an indicator of the body&#8217;s cellular health, in other words whats happening within the cells. Urine shows whats being excreted by the body giving you a picture of how well your filtering system is working.</p>
<p>Some of the biggest breakthroughs have been in genomic research and specifically nutrigenomics (the study of nutrition and genes) where a simple buccal swab (cheek cells) can assess what your genetic predisposition for disease and aging is.  Such DNA assessments are guiding consumers to personalized nutrition.</p>
<p>The advances in preventative health care couldn&#8217;t have been more timely.  Poor diet, stressful lifestyles and an aging baby boomer generation is challenging the overall health of Americans.  Facing an uncertain health care system, people are taking personal responsibility for the health and wellness.</p>
<p>The holistic and alternative medicine field has made remarkable progress.  The &#8220;Dr. Me&#8221; trend started decades ago and has evolved into a scientifically supported &#8220;self-care&#8221; medicine.</p>
